After seven years with Hargreaves, Steve Bell has taken his career from life behind the wheel as an HGV driver to supporting drivers across the business as Driver Resource Manager. It’s a progression that reflects both his own experience on the road and the opportunities available to people who want to build a long-term career with Hargreaves.
Before joining Hargreaves, Steve developed a broad range of experience across the armed forces, shopfitting and logistics, working as a Class 1 driver for Lanchester Dairies and Elddis Transport before making the move to Hargreaves.
What first attracted him to the company was the combination of good wages and the chance to work with bulk tippers, but it’s the people, equipment and opportunities that have kept him here.
“The team culture is very good and the support is there when needed,” said Steve. “We’ve got new trucks, new trailers and good lads that work as a team.”
Steve’s time at Hargreaves has helped him grow both professionally and personally. With four weeks of tipper training, CPC training, ADR training and MPQ training, he’s been able to expand his skills and build on the experience he already had.
“It’s made me ten times the HGV driver I was seven years ago,” said Steve. “Hargreaves helps people grow by giving out the correct training going forward.”
Although his role has developed significantly since he started, Steve still remembers the rhythm of life on the road. A typical day could begin early with his card in, a brew, a vehicle walkaround and checks before heading out for the day, usually completing between two and five tips before parking up for the evening.
For Steve, one of the biggest positives has always been the balance of hard work and reward, including staying busy, making good wages and getting a good finish on a Friday.
